“나는 나무에 그려지고 돌에 새겨지며 태어났다. 내 첫 이름은 ‘오해’였다. 그러나 사람들이 자신들의 필요에 의해 나를 점점 ‘이해’로 만들어 주었다. 나는 복잡한 문법안에 담긴 단순한 사랑, 단수이자 복수,시원이자 결말, 거의 모든 것인 동시에 아무것도 아닌 노래였다. 오랜시간이 흘러 누구도 한 번에 부를 수 없는 이름이 됐다.
그 이름을 다 부르기 위해서는 누군가의 평생이 필요하다. 나는 단수이자 복수, 안개처럼 하나의 덩어리인 동시에 낱낱의 입자로도 존재한다. 나는 내가 나이도록 도운 모든 것의 합, 그러나 그 합들이 스스로를 지워가며 만든 침묵의 무게다. 나는 부재의 부피, 나는 상실의 밀도, 나는 어떤 불빛이 가물대며 버티다 훅 꺼지는 순간 발하는 힘이다.
나는 시원이자 결말, 거의 모든 것인 동시에 아무것도 아닌 노래다. 사람이 낼 수 있는 많은 소리들, 어금닛소리, 헛소리, 입시울소리, 잇소리, 반잇소리와 콧소리, 목소리 등이 음표가 되어 장엄한 오케스트라연주를 한다. 이 다채로운 화음 안에는 도무지 지루한 걸 싫어하는 신의 성격과 남과 똑같은 걸 못 견뎌하는 인간의 의지가 담겨 있다.
어느 민족에게 사랑은 접속사, 그 이웃에게는 조사다. 하지만 어느 부족에서는 그런건 본디 이름을 붙이는게 아니라 하여 아무런 명찰도 달아주지 않는다. 어느 민족에게 ‘보고 싶다’는 한 음절로 족하다. 하지만 다른 부족에게 그 말은 열 문장 이상으로 표현된다. 뿐만 아니다.어느 추운 지방에서는 몇몇 입김 모양도 단어 노릇을 한다.
이들은 과거에 들었으면 절대 흔들리지 않았을 몇몇 밋밋하고 순한 단어 앞에서 휘청거렸다. 그래서 누군가는 자기네 말로 무심코 ‘천도복숭아’라고 말하며 울고, 어떤 이는 ‘종려나무’라고 한 뒤에 가슴이 미어지는 것을 느꼈다. 뜬금없이 떠오른 ‘곤지곤지’라는 단어에 목울대가뜨거워진 이가 있는가 하면, ‘연두’ 또는 ‘뽀뽀’라는 낱말 앞에서 심호흡을 한 사내도 있었다. 그런 말들과 이별하고 싶어 얼마간 입을 굳게닫고 살았다.
혼자 하는 말이 아닌 둘이 하는 말. 셋이 하면 더 좋고, 다섯이 하면 훨씬 신 날 말. 시끄럽고 쓸데없는 말. 유혹하고, 속이고, 농담하고, 화내고, 다독이고, 비난하고, 변명하며, 호소하는 그런 말들을….그는 내이름의 메아리와 그 메아리의 메아리가 만들어내는 오목한 자장 안에머물고 싶어했다. 그는 단지 그 소박한 바람때문에 가슴이 찢어지는느낌을 자주 받았다.”

The people in the vibrant Korean immigrant community in the Boston area understand the complementary values of learning from deep tradition of its own as well as the exuberant pace of modern multi-cultural society that thrive through an inclusive, yet chaotic dynamics.
On one hand, there is a strong desire to share the exquisite beauty of the Korean traditional artistry with art-loving people of this community. On the other, the traditional arts needs to evolve through rapidly shifting flow of the times, and its few precious practitioners find themselves under crisis, faced with mounting commercial pressure, confusing cross-cultural flux, and attention-deficit audiences. Neglecting this while presenting only the universally endorsed museum pieces may amount to cheating, especially in these days where many products from Korea are well known and admired.
The community is blessed with very talented young musicians from all over the world who are bravely charting the challenges in their chosen discipline of music and performance. Naturally, the program is immensely enriched by their contribution.
This year, we also feature TeRra Han, a very talented Kayageum virtuoso from Korea, who will present not only the exquisite traditional music, but also open up to the fellow musicians to take part in a feast of World music, both old and new.
As Ms Han and the fellow musicians present the program that will cut across the times and genres, we hope that all of us in the audience will be treated not only to a feast of music, but also to an opportunity to eavesdrop on a conversation through which these talented musicians negotiate their ways to ride the wind that is the 21st century.
